A compelling mid-19th-century American portrait of Mrs. James Ludlow, formerly in the collection of the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco.

Painted circa 1835–1845, the sitter appears in a deep blue dress with an open neckline, gold jewelry, and softly arranged ringlets characteristic of the period. Her direct gaze and restrained expression give the portrait a particularly personal quality.

The museum label preserved on the reverse identifies the sitter as Mrs. James Ludlow. 

Research suggests that she may be Josephine Dunlop Ludlow, whose daughter later married Salmon P. Chase,Abraham Lincoln’s future Secretary of the Treasury. The painting entered the de Young Museum collection in the 1930s and was deaccessioned in 1978.
