19th-Century French Military Painting — “Le Repos du Guerrier,” Attributed to A. Roy

A stunning rendered French oil on board, full of tiny narrative details and particularly lovely up close. The warm village setting, horses, uniforms, and flashes of light across the armor give this painting a rich presence.

An older label on the reverse attributes the work to A. Roy (French, 1825–1880), titles it “Le Repos du Guerrier,” and dates it to circa 1860. The same table lists a price of $14,500. The attribution has not been independently verified.

The painting is presented in an especially substantial, deeply detailed gilt wood frame with an A. Roy name plaque. The frame is wide, chunky, and unusually deep, giving the piece much more scale and visual impact. It is also quite heavy for its size.

A wonderful piece for a library, study, gallery wall, or any interior that calls for something with history, texture, and character.
