Antique Grand Tour Pair of Mythological Miniature Paintings
Le Satyre refusé & Jupiter in the Guise of Diana and the Nymph Callisto
18th / 19th Century
A rare surviving pair of antique hand-painted Grand Tour miniatures, each depicting a celebrated 18th-century French mythological composition.

The first, Le Satyre refusé (The Rejected Satyr), is after Jacques-Philippe Caresme, with a tiny inscription within the painting appearing to reference Gilles Demarteau.

Its companion is after François Boucher’s 1759 Jupiter in the Guise of Diana and the Nymph Callisto - a Rococo story of disguise, deception and desire.

Both are beautifully and delicately painted, with remarkably fine brushwork throughout the figures, faces and drapery.

Each is hand-painted on a thin natural panel, catalogued by the auction house as bone, and set within a matching engraved natural-material frame accented with mother-of-pearl / nacre. Both retain their decorative hanging rings and aged textile tassels.
Especially wonderful as a matched Grand Tour pair still surviving together.

18th / 19th century
Approx. 5.25” H × 6” W each

Condition: Age-related wear, small losses and old repairs to the frames consistent with age. Please review all photographs for condition and details.
