1967 “Canal Arias” — Argentine Oil Painting, Signed Prelato

Some landscapes simply depict a place. Others seem to hold an entire world within them.

Painted in 1967, Canal Arias draws the eye into a secluded waterway illuminated by a remarkable golden light. Deep greens, earthy browns, and flashes of blue and red are built up in expressive, heavily textured brushwork, giving the landscape an almost dreamlike depth.

The painting is signed “Prelato” at the lower right. Based on the signature, title, date, and subject, it is believed to be a work by Argentine artist Miguel Ángel Prelato (1910–1968), a self-taught painter from San Pedro known for his lyrical landscapes of the waterways and vegetation surrounding the Argentine delta.

These river landscapes were deeply connected to Prelato’s own life. In 1968—only a year after this painting was completed—he disappeared while traveling aboard his boat, Serpentina, in the delta. His final fate remains unknown, giving works from this late period an especially compelling history.

The original plaque identifies the work as Canal Arias, names M. A. Prelato, dates both the painting and frame to 1967, and states that the frame is finished in 22-karat gold.

A richly atmospheric painting for someone drawn not only to beautiful art, but to pieces with individuality, history, and a story that continues beyond the canvas.
